Obituary

Ralph Edward “Ed” Hyer, 82, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Rev. Trish Underberg will officiate. Burial will take place at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Ralph Edward Hyer was born on May 15, 1937 in Washington Courthouse, Ohio to Robert and Jessie (Keaton) Hyer. He graduated from Washington Courthouse High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force on June 28, 1955. Ed proudly served as a supply specialist and earned an Honorable Discharge on December 10, 1956.

Ed and Debra Val Dawdy were united in marriage on January 21, 1975 in Fallbrook, California. Ed was worked primarily as an auto mechanic but he was a “Jack of all trades." They lived throughout the United States including Montana where Ed was a sheep herder. He and Debbie moved to Le Mars in 1982. Ed worked at Harker’s and Tyson’s in Sioux Center, Iowa and more recently with Debbie at the Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars. He retired in 2012.

Ed always had a smile and greeted everyone he met. He will be remembered for his outgoing personality and sense of humor. He invited everyone to his funeral because he said, “There will be lots of food!” Ed enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors. He also loved his dogs Ruby and Mitzi.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 44 years, Debbie of Le Mars, IA; a son and his wife, Marcell and Teresa Hyer of Akron, IA; 4 grandchildren, Sabrina, Victoria, Jillian and Drake; 2 step-grandchildren, Jazmin and Jadin; a great-grandson, Sora: a step-great-grandson, Caden; a sister and her husband, Gail and James Henry of Ohio; and a brother, Frank Hyer of Kentucky; brothers-in-law, Dennis (Teri), Donald and Doug (Kathy); sisters-in-law, Donna Klemme, Deanna Gartner, Dixie (Steve) Carda, Dawn (Tom) Beaulieu; Darlene Hast, Darla Anson, Denise (Vern) Plum; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law, June and Melvin Dawdy; a sister, Eleanor (Albert) Rapp; five brothers, Robert, Tom, Delbert, Malcom and Clovie; a brothers-in-law, Dan (Diane) Dawdy, Dean Dawdy, George Gartner and Merlyn Klemme.
