John Toben Jr., 87, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 18, 2018 at Rexwinkel-Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation with the family present will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Rexwinkel-Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

John Toben Jr. was born on May 18, 1930 to Carl and Agnes (Welch) Toben in Akron, Iowa. He was raised in rural Westfield, Iowa, attended Toben Country School, and graduated from Westfield High School in 1948. John was united in marriage to Arlene Mae Wegner on February 19, 1951 in Vermillion, South Dakota. They lived in Sioux City a short time while John worked at Cudahy Packing Plant. They then moved east of Akron, Iowa and farmed on rented land for 10 years. In 1962 they purchased a farm in Union County, South Dakota. John raised cattle and hogs, but he loved crop farming. He farmed corn, beans, oats, barley, and alfalfa. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting. He was a talented mechanic, working on all of his own equipment over the years. He also loved a cup of coffee and to visit with friends.

John is survived by his children: Jeanie (Jim) Wetrosky of Sioux City, IA, Mike (Pat) Toben of rural Utica, SD, Jack (Dot) Toben of Sioux City, IA, Jim (Kerri) Toben of Jackson, NE, and Loren (Tammie) Toben of Westfield, IA; 17 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; siblings: Gene (Connie) Toben of Le Mars, IA, Jo (Loren) Hansen of Pierson, IA, Carl (Janet) Toben of Ida Grove, IA, and Marvin (Alyce) Toben of Westfield, IA; and many nieces, nephews, and extended relatives.

John is preceded by his parents; grandchildren: Christy Wetrosky, Keith Toben and Eric Toben; and sister, Mary (Lyle) Wegner.
