Arvel L. Morehead, 84, of Seney, died Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars, Le Mars.

Arvel Lee Morehead was born Jan. 14, 1934, near Westfield, the son of Vernon Arthur and Winifred Elizabeth (Hoffman) Morehead. He attended country school near Westfield and later Maurice Orange City High School.

Arvel married Ramona Dobbert March 23, 1952 in Le Mars. The couple made their home in Seney and were together for 58 years. Arvel and Ramona attended Seney United Methodist Church where they were both members for over 50 years. Ramona died March 5, 2010.

Arvel began his military service Oct. 12, 1955, with the United States Army. He was stationed at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, Fort George, Maryland and later served overseas in Germany and at the border of Russia. He specialized in military communications. His tour of service was completed with Company A of the National Guard in Le Mars.

As a young man, Arvel was employed as a farm laborer and carpenter. He worked for Moore Lumber Company and manufactured concrete block. He assembled products for the Moz-All lawn mower company in Merrill. He enjoyed a 40 year career with the Le Mars Community School District retiring in 1999. Throughout those years he was a bus driver, custodian, and did building maintenance.

After retiring, he returned to school part-time in food service and drove the lunch wagon, delivering food to the elementary schools for seven years.

Arvel was skilled at carpentry and mastered many trades. He rarely paid for labor.

He was active in the Le Mars Saddle Club and 4-H Horsemanship where he served as a project superintendent. He trained many horses over the years.

Arvel enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren. He loved his Boston Terrier, Buddy.

Arvel enjoyed the outdoors including camping, boating, and taking care of his lawn.

Survivors include two children; son, Marty and his wife, Michelle and daughter Roxane Anderson and her husband, Craig; five grandchildren; Kory Morehead (Zoe Johnson), Lauren (Trevor) Hartwig, Nathan Anderson, Derek Anderson, and Addison Anderson; and two great-grandchildren, Rowan and Ryker Johnson-Morehead.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ramona; his parents Vernon and Winnie; a sister, Arlene Van Voorst; and a brother, Dwight.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., today (Friday) at the Seney United Methodist Church in Seney. Pastor Carolyn Hollar will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation began at 2 p.m., Thursday, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars, with the family present to greet friends from 5-8 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Friday.

The Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars is assisting Arvel’s family with funeral arrangements.
