Montague A. Cass Jr.

Montague A. Cass Jr., 93, of Le Mars, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1993, at Sartori Hospital, Cedar Falls.

Mr. Cass was born May 5, 1900, at Eldora, Colo., the son of Montague A. Cass Sr. and Jane Cass. He graduated in 1919 from Le Mars Central High School and earned a B.S. degree in 1924 from Iowa State University, Ames, where he was a member of two fraternities. He married Pearl May Eikenbary on Oct. 21, 1933, at Fort Dodge.

He was manager of Plymouth Cereal Mills from 1927 to 1950. He retired in 1975 after a grain commission partnership, Hercek & Cass, operated in Le Mars since 1946. He was a lifetime member of the Chicago Board of Trade and a member of the Omaha Grain Exchange and the Sioux City Grain Exchange.

Mr. Cass was the first president of the Plymouth County Fair Board in 1941 and was a member of the fair’s Hall of Fame. He received a citation for meritorious service in 1945 as chairman of the National War Fund. He was a 50-year member of the Le Mars Elks Lodge and the Le Mars Blue Lodge and was past master of the Masonic Lodge. He also was a member of the Sioux City Consistory and Abu Bekr Shrine.

In Le Mars, he was past president of the chamber of commerce, Rotary Club and Country Club. He was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church and had served as a member of the Le Mars school board.

Survivors include his wife, a son, Gilbert Cass of Grand Blanc, Mich., a daughter Margaret McInroy, of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a sister Dorothy Parker, of Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents and in infant daughter, Elizabeth.

The body was cremated. Interment at Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars, will take place later. Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of arrangements.
