YEARS OF DEDICATION

By Lorrie Cook

After teaching for a total of twenty-six years, Mrs. Ida Nicholson is leaving. Mrs. Nicholson has been teaching for eighteen years in the LeMars Community School District at Craig.

Although she loves teaching, she feels that she must resign and enjoy life.

Mrs. Nicholson has noticed many changes in the way things are taught in Social Studies and Math. She also said that some things go out of teaching and then seem to come back again.

Mrs. Nicholson has a total of twenty-four kids in her room, which includes grades 3,4,5. She feels there is one advantage in this, when a child doesn’t quite understand something when he was in the lower grade the child can listen to it again and maybe understand it then.

Mrs. Nicholson says she doesn’t have much of discipline problem, and when she does she just threatens them with the “Nicholson Special” which sounds a lot tougher than it really is. She said all it is is a long heart to heart talk with the student in the hall. Mrs. Nicholson said a rumor started a long, long time ago and the students really think its bad if a student gets the “Nicholson Special.” The children seem to be very happy with the disciplining that she has there.

Some comments she has about teaching is there must be a need for good study habits and have a joy in learning and want to learn. There must be a good working relationship between the children and the teacher. She also said that in Craig she must be a teacher, doctor, and counselor all in one.

Mrs. Nicholson said she likes teaching in Craig a lot and hates to leave but she feels she must get out and enjoy life, which she plans to do after the school year is finished.

One interesting comment Mrs. Nicholson said is that she feels all teachers should do is teach to meet the children’s needs.

Goodbye, Mrs. Nicholson, and thanks so much for what you have done for the students and the school district.
