Mildred Lucille Bellwood
B: June 3, 1918
Married: Matthew James Gale
September 12, 1946 in Akron Iowa
My father passed away in 1999.

My mother graduated from Akron High School and attended Western Union College (name changed to Westmar) for one year, then she began teaching at the age of 19.

She taught in the following schools:

*Breezy Hill (4 miles east of Westfield) for 2 years

*Portland Township (8 miles east of Akron) for 3 1/2 years

*Union Consolidated School in 1941. She was the only teacher in Plymouth Co. with a 2 year degree eligible to teach in a consolidated school

In the summer of 1943, she left with her sister Irene Fern Bellwood to work in the Boeing Aircraft factory in Seattle

She returned in the fall of 1943 and taught at Wall Lake, Iowa for 2 years

*After her marriage to my dad in 1946, she taught at Preston Township school north of Akron.

*She began teaching at Westfield School, Westfield, Iowa, in January of 1958, where she taught 8th and 5th graders over the years.

Achieving her four year degree was a goal of hers, and in 1980 she received her bachelors degree from Westmar College.

Mom retired in 1982 from Westfield after teaching there for 23 years.

Mom is currently a resident at the Algona Manor Care Center in Algona, Iowa. She has lived in Algona for the past 5 years.

Lucille Bellwood taught these Plym Co. rural schools:
~Westfield No. 5 "Breezy Hill," 1937-1939
~Portland Stony Point School, 1939-1942
~Union Consolidated, 1941-1944
