Mrs. Al Hayes, 84, Died Here Monday
Funeral services were held here Thursday morning for Mrs. Al Hayes, 84, elderly Emmetsburg resident who died at her home here Monday [January 27, 1941] following a short illness.

The Rev. Thomas Lawless officiated and burial was in the Mallard, Ia., cemetery in charge of the Foy funeral home. Pallbearers were P.C. Jackman, B.F. Montgomery, J.P. Hand, Dave Joynt, Dennis Martin and James Foy.

Mrs. Hayes [Susan Toner McMahon Hayes] was born in Scotland and came to America about 50 years ago. She had been a resident of this vicinity for over 40 years. She is survived by her husband and three children, Mrs. Frank Kauffman of Laurens, John McMahon of Estherville, and Joseph Hayes. She also leaves 18 grandchildren, including Edward and Emmet McMahon of Emmetsburg.

Mrs. Hayes had been ill in her home for about two weeks, and had been suffering from influenza. (Emmetsburg Reporter, Emmetsburg, IA, January 30, 1941)

Mrs. Al Hayes, 84, died at her home in this city Monday at 12:20 a.m. after an illness of about a week with influenza. Funeral services were held at 9 o’clock on Thursday morning at St. Thomas Catholic church with the assistant pastor, Rev. Thos. Lawless, officiating. Interment was in the St. John’s cemetery south of this city. The pallbearers were P.C. Jackman, James Foy, Dennis Martin, Jas. Hand, B.F. Montgomery and Dave Joynt. The Foy Funeral Home of Estherville was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Susan Tonner [Toner] was born December 17, 1855, in Scotland. She was married in her native land to Charles McMahon, who was later killed in a coal mine. To this union five sons were born. Four sons preceded their mother in death. They were Charles, Barnie, James and Peter McMahon. About forty-five years ago Mrs. McMahon and her family came to America settling in Chicago, Ill. A few years later they came to Laurens. The deceased was married about thirty-nine years ago to Al Hayes at Laurens. They lived in that vicinity about four years, moving to Emmetsburg thirty-five years ago.

She is survived by her husband and three children, Mrs. Frank Kauffman of Laurens, John McMahon of Estherville and Joseph Hayes. She also leaves nineteen grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Frank Eaton of Cedar Rapids, to mourn her loss.
