TARPENNING, Mrs. Ritty, died at her home near Emporia, Ks. Sept
28, 1910, at 3 A.M. from paralysis, at the age of
69y 4m 7d. She was the oldest of eight children of James and Lockey
Darby and was born in Dallas Co. Mo. on May 21, 1841. In 1850
she came with her parents to Fremont County and for a short time
the family resided near Hamburg; later they located 3 mi. west of
Tabor, which was their home for several years. Her educational
advantages were meagre, yet she gained a knowledge of the
rudiments of the common branches taught in those days. On Dec.
17, 1868, she was united in marriage to James Tarpenning and to
them two children were born, namely: Mrs. Sadie Turnbull, who
resided with her parents, and J. L. Tarpenning of Tabor. She
leaves of her own immediate family her husband, two children,
sister, Mrs. E. R. Pratt of Northboro and D. D. Darby of
Hamburg. In 1869 she and her husband moved to Page county and
located at what was then known as Union Grove, two mi. SW of
Northboro, which was her home until two years ago they moved to
Ks. During her long residence near Northboro her acquaintance
was widely extended; and during her invalid life of six years
proved unmistakably her character. She was buried on Friday the
30th in Union Grove cemetery near Northboro by the side of her
parents, who had passed on before.
