SERVICES HELD FOR MELVIN MAN

Amiel Graves, 49, Died at His Farm Home Sunday, March 29

Amiel Graves was born January 13, 1893, on a farm near Melvin, Iowa, and passed away at his farm home near Ocheyedan, on March 28, 1942, at the age of 49 years, 2 months and 15 days. He grew to manhood in this community and spent most of his life here.

In 1916 he and his brothers went to Montana where they engaged in farming for two years. In 1918 he was called into the service of his country for one year. In 1919 he, along with his brothers, began work in the construction business, forming the original Graves Brothers Construction Company. He pursued this line of work for the next 18 years, spending most of his winters with his sister in California.

On November 12, 1929 he was united in marriage with Miss Ruth Phelps at Los Angeles, Calif. They returned to Melvin where they made their home for the next eight years. In March, 1938, they moved to their farm 5 miles west of Ocheyedan. On March 5, last, he had the misfortune of falling and injuring himself. He was taken to the hospital at Sibley and given the best care possible. For some time it appeared that he would with-stand the shock, and recover; thus his passing came as an unexpected blow, when he passed away at his home Saturday morning, March 28.

He leaves to mourn his passing: his wife, and one daughter, Betty Maye, three sisters, Alga Hokuf of California, Caroline Hitchcock and Lisetti Imhoff of Melvin; two brothers, Williams and Lou of Melvin; his stepfather, Amiel Berndt(sic) of Melvin and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held from the Melvin Methodist church with Rev. W. Zibilkain in charge. Interment was made in the Baker cemetery.

NOTE: Amiel Graves was the son of Hans and Minnie (Rhode) Graves and the step-son of Emil Berendt.
