Funeral services for Henry John Birkman were held Thursday, December 26, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rev. Melvin Thur officiating Mr. Birkmann | passed away December 21 at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 20 days. Pallbearers were Arthur Fintel, Walter Massmann, William McCleerey, Alfred Mertens, Reinhart Massmann and Marvin Fintel. Mrs. Jim Meyer was vocalist with Mrs. Marvin Fintel as organist. Burial was in Prairie View Cemetery.

Obituary

Henry John Birkmann, son of August Birkmann and his wife, Mary nee Menke, was born March 1, 1884 in Franklin County, Missouri. He was baptized March 30, 1884 and confirmed at Ebenezer Evangelical Church of Boeuf Creek, Mo.

He was united in marriage to Rosa nee Koch July 7, 1912 at Stony Elm, Mo. To this union was born one son. Following their marriage they lived in Washington, Mo., where Henry worked in a shoe factory until moving to Paullina in 1919. They lived on a farm west of Paullina for several years and Henry worked on the Art Fintel farm. They joined the Evangelical Lutheran Church here and have been members since. In 1928 they moved to town and Henry worked for Slagle Lumber Co. of Paullina and also managed the Paullina Hotel for several years.

About fifteen years ago Henry was injured in a fall and has been unable to get around well ever since. On Monday, December 9 he suffered a stroke which hospitalized him at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee. Last Saturday afternoon, Henry passed away at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 20 days.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Rosa, one son, Kenneth of Larrabee; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Emde of Cave Creek, Ariz., Mr. [Mrs.] Walter Bockelmann of Sioux Falls, S. D., Mrs. Joe Moosmann of Washington, Mo; one brother, Ed of New Haven, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Oscar.
