Roger Nelson Potter (1917-1990)

Roger Nelson Potter, the son of James Nelson Potter and Hattle
Yockey Potter, was born April 7, 1917. at Alta, Iowa, and passed
away November 20. 1990, at Spencer Municipal Hospital of
Spencer.

Roger's mother died when he was three days old. He was raised by
an uncle and aunt. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rawson of Onawa. Iowa. He
graduated from Onawa High School in 1934, and from the University
of Iowa College of Law In 1941. He passed the Iowa bar examination
the same year.

In July 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve air corps. He
received his commission in July 1941 as an Ensign. He was discharged
in 1946 as a Lieutenant j.g. He served on the aircraft carrier
VC76 as a legal officer, and saw combat duty In the Pacific.

On July 15, 1942, he was married to Lucile Coffman at Corpus
Christ!. Texas. He started practicing law in Hartley In 1946. and
continued until he retired in 1982.

Roger was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hartley,
the Iowa State Bar Association and O'Brien County Bar, and the
American Legion - Arthur Kirchhoff Post. He served as city attorney for several years; he was also on the
Hartley school board, and Adjutant for the Hartley American Legion.
He received his lifetime membership in the Hartley Chamber
of Commerce, and also served on various committees at Meadowbrook
Golf and Country Club.

He enjoyed reading, gardening and golf. For the past several
years, his health had been declining and greatly limited his activities.

He was preceded in death by both parents, and one sister.

He is survived by his wife, Lucile; four children, Carol Potter of
New Orleans, Louisiana. James Potter of Storm Lake. Susan Enzle
of Iowa City and Richard Potter of Chapel Hill, North Carolina: two
daughters-in-law, Jeri Hirt Potter and Alicia Rivero Potter; two
grandchildren, Jason Potter and Andrea Potter.

Services in memory of Roger Potter were held 2 p.m. Friday,
November 23, 1990. at Hartley United Methodist Church. Rev.
Melvin Amnion officiated. Casket bearers were Don Treimer, Duane Kolpin, Don Meyer,
Dennis Harms, Jerry Johnson and Mark Steinmetz. Honorary casket
attendants were Bill Loder, Ingwer Hansen. Robert Hansen, Don
Hansen. Virgil Treimer, Vern Jacobson. Eldon Paulsen, Cloy Hirt
and Roger Westphal. Committal service was In Pleasant View Cemetery of Hartley. A
special military presentation of the flag was conducted at the
graveside. Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
