Herb Leth (1915-1990)

LETH, WING, WAGNER, SCHAA, BYERS, THEE

Services in memory of Herb Leth were held 2 p.m. Thursday,
November 15. 1990. at the Hartley United Methodist Church. Rev.
Melvin Amnion officiated. Presentation of the flag was made by the American Legion.

Casket bearers were David Petersen. Wally Petersen. Steve Byers,
Rolln Muhs. Norman Lux and Otto Wagner. Jr. Committal service
was in Pleasant View Cemetery of Hartley. Baumgarten Funeral
Home was in charge of arrangements.

Herbert Delbert Leth. the son of Emil and Florence Wing Leth, was
born at Hartley On November 27, 1915. He attended rural schools
near his childhood home through the eighth grade.

He was united in marriage to Fern Wagner on March 11, 1941, at
Sioux City. Iowa. They made their home on a farm at Hartley until
Herb entered the military service.

He was inducted into the United States Army on January 27.
1942, and served as a Private for two months during basic training.
He then served as a Tec 4 Field Lineman where he strung wires in
trie field and under actual combat conditions. He connected phones,
radios, etc.. and served In Australia and the Southwestern Pacific
area. He received his Honorable Discharge July 9. 1945.

He then continued farming at Hartley until retirement in 1981.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American
Legion at Hartley. He received a Purple Heart for being wounded in
action. He was always a great sports fan. especially of Hartley High
School, where he was recognized as the "Fan of the Year."

He passed away at the Mann Memorial Wing on November 12,
1990, at the age of 74. Preceding him in death were his parents, and
an infant daughter. Carol Jean.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife. Fern; one daughter and
her husband. Jeanne and Wayne Schaa of Hartley: two grandchildren.
Chad and Darren Schaa; one brother. Al of Melvin; two sisters,
Mrs. Elmer (Orpha) Byers and Mrs. Bud (Millie) Thee of Hartley;
other relatives and friends.
