Everett John Byers (1915-1996)

Everett John Byers, the son of William and Alice Collett Byers, was born June 9, 1915, near May City, Iowa and it was in the country schools around Osceola County that he received his early education. He later attended school in Hartley and finished his schooling there.

On May 8, 1941, Everett entered the military and served with the Army until the time of his discharge on August 25, 1945. While in the Army Air Force, he was in the air offensive over Europe and Northern France, and was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

On September 5, 1964, Everett married Violet Duis in Hartley and following their marriage, they farmed near May City. Due to illness in 1969, Everett had to slow down his farming operation but continued to live on the farm. While living in the Hartley area, he was a member of the United Methodist Church, and the Arthur W. Kirchhoff Post #288 of the American Legion for 52 years.

On August 22, 1996, Mr. Byers passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 81.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Violet of rural May City; one son, Jack of Spencer; one daughter, Ann at home; one brother, Clare Byers of Hartley; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services in memory of Everett John Byers were conducted Saturday, August 24, 1996, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in HarUey. Pastor John Rosenberger officiated. Casket bearers were Ron Sterk, Todd Schiernbeck, Jim Noonan, Kelley Monthei, Jim Nelson and Steve Byers. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery of Hartley, with Arthur W. Kirchhoff Post 288, American Legion conducting the Military Service. Warner-Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
