David Byers (1876-1964)

David Byers, the son of John and Susan Wilson Byers, was born Dec. 4, 1876 at Pontiac, Illinois. He entered into eternal life on May 28, 1964, following a short hospitalization. He had attained the age of 87 years, 5 months, and 24 days.

He was married on Jan. 5, 1905 to Minnie Margaret Sauer, at Hartley, Iowa. To them were born two daughters, Leola and Verna. The family lived on a farm northeast of Hartley until 1920, at which time they moved to Spencer.

Mr. Byers became affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Spencer, and also joined the Methodist Church there. In 1924 they moved to Des Moines, where they resided for 20 years, coming back to Spencer in 1944. They were privileged to celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1955.

Mrs. Byers passed away June 29, 1956, and just a year later Dave, «s he was familiarly known, moved to the McCroskey nursing home in Hartley, where he lived for the remaining seven years of his life.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Verna (Mrs. E. L. Mauritz) in 1961; a granddaughter, Arlene Joan May; a sister, Mrs. Mary Page of Delta, Colo.; a brother, John Wm. Byers of Hartley; and his son-in-law, Emory Mauritz.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Leola (Mrs. W. Fay Beasley) of Topeka, Kansas; his granddaughter, Marilyn Mauritz of Ann Arbor, Mich.; his grandson, Charles May of Dallas, Tex.; two great grandchildren; three sisters, Belle (Mrs. Grover Sauer) of Hartley, Mrs. Ella Page of Austin, Minn., and Susie (Mrs. Emil Ahrenstorff) of Hartley; two brothers, James and Robb, both of Hartley, as well as other relatives and a great many friends.

Services were held Sunday, May 31 from the Methodist Church with Rev. D- D. Samuelson officiating. Pallbearers were Gene Ahrenstorff, Marlin Vetter, Russel Sauer, Clare Byers, Elmer Byers and Ray Peterson. Interment was made in pleasant View Cemetery with Baumgarten Funeral Home in charge.
