Berneice Irene Holtz (1934-2006)

Berneice Irene Holtz, the daughter of Henry and Norma (Jansen) Holtz, was born near Hartley, Iowa on July 2, 1934. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Royal, Iowa, and was confirmed at the American Lutheran Church in Melvin, Iowa.

She spent her youth in the Hartley and Moneta areas, attending school in Moneta for eight years. Her family then moved to Melvin, where she attended Melvin High School, graduating in 1952. Berneice attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Human Services. Upon graduation from college, Berneice was employed by the State of Iowa as a social worker. She worked and lived in the towns of Spencer, Sioux City, Grinncll and Marshalltown.

After her parents died, Berneice was taken in by Ott and Helen Nagel, her mother's sister, and later by Dale and Marlene Nagcl. She thoroughly enjoyed coming home for the holidays and other special occasions that were spent with the Nagel families.

Berneice died at the Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake, Iowa on December 25,2005, at the age of 71 years, five months and 23 days.

Berneice is survived by her brother, Maynard Holtz, and his wife, Leona of Everly, Iowa; her sister-in-law, Velma Holtz of Spencer, Iowa; three nephews: David Holtz of Everly, Kevin Holtz of Omaha, Nebraska and Douglas Holtz of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; three nieces: Beverly Schoonnan and her husband, Vernon of Everly, Vivian Masters and her husband, Peter of Des Moines, Iowa, and Peggy Jo Hazeltine and her husband, Neil of Bloomington, Indiana; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Melvin, and her nephew, Gayle Holtz.

Berneice was a member of the Legion Auxiliary and a volunteer at the Marshalltown Soldier's Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Her special interests included flowers, gardening and watching Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins baseball games. She especially enjoyed visiting family and friends. While at Hilltop Care Center, Berneice was cared for by Grace Lutheran Church of Spirit Lake.

Funeral services for Berneice I Holtz were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2005, at the Hartley Funeral Home Chapel in Hartley, Iowa. Rev. David Bcrgstroni officiated. Pallbearers were Dale Nagcl, Vernon Nagcl, David Holtz, Kevin Holtz, Doug Holtz and Dan Jobes. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley. Hartley Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
