Again one of those who have seen the State of Iowa grow from a wilderness into one of the finest states in the Union has passed to his reward.
In Scott county, Iowa, on the 1st day of August, 1862, Hermann F. Stoterau was born to Peter Stoterau and his wife Friederika, nee Schaller. He spent his childhood and youth around Davenport, where he worked as a farmer among those who made fertile land of the trackless plains. On Feb. 13, 1886, he was united in marriage with Miss Louisa Jipp at Davenport. The young couple made their home on a farm near Donahue for four years, after which they moved to the vicinity of Walcott, Iowa where they resided for 13 years.
In 1903 they moved to O'Brien county to a farm three miles north of Hartley, where they stayed until 1916 when they retired and moved to Hartley.
Five children were born in their union, two of whom, Hilda who died in early childhood, and Alvena, Mrs. Louis Bruegmann, who passed away in 1926, preceded their father in death. In 1921, he lost his companion who had for 35 years shared the joys and sorrows of life with him. Since then, Mr. Stoterau, lived alone, although his children cared for him devotedly, and looked after his every need.
He enjoyed good health and no special warning of his approaching end was given his family. He retired as usual on Wednesday night after having been down town during the day. When a neighbor went to visit with him on Thursday afternoon, he found him lying peacefully in his bed, where it seems he died without a struggle. The end had come apparently during the early hours of Thursday, March 23rd. Mr. Stoterau reached the age of 70 years, 7 months and 20 days.
He is survived by two sons, Louis of Hartley and Ed of Iona, Minn., one daughter, Mrs. Rudolph Brandt of Hartley; two sons-in-law and two daughters-in-law; one brother, Hugo, of Davenport; two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Farrence of Peoria, Ill., and Mrs. Hermann Benthien of Walcott, Iowa; six grandchildren, one great grandchild, a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives too numerous to mention.
Funeral services were held at the home on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. F. W. Budy officiating. A mixed quartet sang several selections. Interment was at Pleasant View cemetery.
