Arvida R Westberg was born on January 4, 1905, in Sanborn, O'Brien County, Iowa, when her father, Nelson "Nels", was 32, and her mother, Elizabeth nee David, was 27.

Arvida was their first-born, and would be joined by one sister, Ruth Marie (Stanley Lundquist); and four brothers, two of whom, Andrew and Gerhardt (Erhardt's twin), died in infancy. Erhardt remained near his sisters, while brother Nelson, Jr., eventually moved to Washington State.

Her mother died in 1920 following a long illness and hospitalization in Cherokee, Cherokee County, Iowa. Arvida, with her family, moved to Minneapolis. Her father passed away in 1928.

Arvida died of emphysema at the age of 72 on March 23, 1977, in Terre Haute, Indiana, and is at rest nearby in Tecumseh near her brother Erhardt with whom she shares a memorial marker.
