Ruth Elsie Nelson, the daughter of Jacob and Mary Martin Brown, was born October 20, 1917 in Forbes, North Dakota. Her childhood years were spent in North Dakota where she received her education. She worked as a housekeeper and waitress before her marriage.

Ruth married Clarence Nelson on October 8, 1944 in Long Beach, California. Following their marriage, they farmed in Cherokee and O'Brien counties for many years. They eventually moved to Sutherland, Iowa where they made their permanent home. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sutherland, where she was an active member of the UMW. She was also a member of the Legion Auxiliary. Ruth enjoyed many camping, fishing and motorcycle trips in her early retirement years. Her hobbies included Bingo, crossword puzzles, gardening, sewing and crafts.

Ruth passed away at the Sutherland Care Center on Saturday, October 25, 2003 at the age of 86. She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence of Sutherland; one son, Thomas Nelson of Storm Lake; three grandchildren: Matthew, Molly and Marny Nelson; two great grandchildren: Ethan and Abby Nelson Vogeler; one brother, Robert and his wife, Verna Brown of Forbes, North Dakota; one sister Violette and her husband, James Loberger, of Fargo, North Dakota, many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral services for Ruth E. Nelson were held Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at the United Methodist Church, Sutherland, Iowa with Rev. Dennis Hopes officiating. Musician was Ben Grant. Hymns were "How Great Thou Art" and "Because He Lives." Casket Bearers were Gary Jungjohann, Leonard Amendt, Ken Orthmann, Oscar Adams, Leroy Carper and Matthew Nelson. Interment was in the Waterman Cemetery, Sutherland, Iowa under the direction of Warner Funeral Home, Sutherland, Iowa.
