Fern Lilly Nelson, daughter of Floyd and Marie Kunkel Hill, was born January 13, 1916 at Detroit, Michigan. She moved with her parents to Sutherland as a small child and was a lifetime resident of the area. She attended Sutherland High School.

She was united in marriage to George T. Nelson on November 26, 1936 at Peterson, Iowa. They made their home on various farms in the Sutherland area, moving into Sutherland in 1972.

She was a member of the Church of Christ, Women's Farm Bureau, was a 4-H leader for a number of years and an active member of Cheerful Workers.

She entered Millie's Rest Home in 1989. She passed away at Sutherland on September 15, 1991 at the age of 75.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, George in 1986 and one grandson, Todd Nelson. Left to cherish her memory are her one daughter and her husband, Marlene and Bruce Osborn of Cylinder, Iowa; one son and his wife, Phil and Donna Nelson of Milford, Iowa; two grandchildren, Ron and Dawn, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 18, 1991 at 10:00 a.m. at the Baumgarten Funeral Home in Sutherland. Ken Greeley officiated. Casket bearers were Burton Brown, Kenneth Nelson, Rickie Nelson, James Johanson, Donald Nelson, and Ronald Wittrock. Committal service was held at Waterman Cemetery, Sutherland, with Baumgarten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
