Elk Point, S.D. -- Irene Chloe (Syfert) Lane was born May 28, 1930, in Elk Point. Throughout her childhood she lived in many places, including California and Missouri, but always considered Elk Point home. Irene C. Lane, 73, of Elk Point died Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital.

She married Robert M. Lane on December 25. 1948, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elk Point. They continued to make their home in Elk Point, raising three children, Lissa, Mark and Todd.

During her life, she worked as a telephone operator, an upholsterer, a school cook, a library aide, and operated her own craft business. She always enjoyed sewing, knitting and creating memorable gifts for her family and friends. She also showed her talent as a soprano soloist for many years.

She was devoted to her family and counted her grandchildren as her greatest joy. She will be greatly missed by her husband of 55 years, Robert; their children, Lissa Lane-Johnson and her husband, Dean of Hospcrs, IA, Mark Lane and his wife, Wendy of Primghar, IA, and Todd Lane and his wife, JoAnne of Brawley, CA; grandchildren, Emily Bonnema and her husband, Benjamin of Elk Point, Lukas Johnson of Hospers, Rory, Ivy and Sean Lane, all of Primghar, Jessica Wick of La Quinta, CA, Brandi Walls and her husband, Shane of Brawley, CA, and Alexandra Lane of Brawley; two great-grandchildren, Starla Lane and Desmand Walls; and three sisters, LaVaughn Bond, Rac Bigsby and Kay Lower.

She was preceded in death by her birth parents, Chloe (Dora Syfert and Omer Syfert; stepmother. Zenobia (Doral) Syfert; adoptive parents, Goldie (Syfert) Maginot and her husband, Henry Maginot; and a brother, Ordell Syfert.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elk Point. Burial was in Elk Point Cemetery. Visitation was at 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m., at Anderson Siecke Funeral Home in Elk Point.
