Charles Schmith dies - Spent almost entire life in O'Brien County

Charles Schmith, 76, who was able to celebrate his fiftieth wedding anniversary in February of this year, died at his home here on September 21 after a long illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 23 with services at the home at 1:30 and at St. John Lutheran Church at Germantown at 2 o'clock. Interment was in St. John Cemetery. The Rev. G. B. Eschenbacher was in charge of the services.

Charles Schmith was born on July 23, 1874 in Brighton, N. Y. As a child he came with his parents to Caledonia Township in O'Brien County. On February 25, 1900 he was married to Ida Steinberg and they moved on an O'Brien County farm.

Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Schmith, one child being lost in infancy.

In 1943 the family moved to Paullina where Mr. Schmith has spent the remainder of his life. He was 76 years, 1 month and 28 days old at the time of his death.

He is survived by his widow, eight sons, Oscar, Carl, Raymond, Edward, Walter and Erwin of Paullina, Arnold of Primghar and Arthur of Doon, two daughters, Mrs. Hulda Kuester of Granville and Alma of Paullina as well as three brothers, John of Primghar, William of New Hampton and Henry of Quimby and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Ballard of Granville. There are 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild

Pallbearers were Emil Rehder, Ernest Horn. George Bruns, John Schultz, Fred Voss and William Voss.

Attending the funeral services from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Smith, Lakefield, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. John Stolley, Spencer, Henry Techen, Arthur and Tillie, Mr. and Mrs. Arlie Techen, Mrs. John Sohl, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Schroeder and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Techen, all of Hull; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Rohlfsen, Mrs. Amanda Wittrock, Jackson, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. William Rohlfsen, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Jeffery, Mr. and Mrs. James Dunn, all of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Boldenow, Elk Point, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Wood, Kiron; Mr. and Mrs. William Smith, New Hampton; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Breitbarth of Quimby.
