SERVICES HELD FOR MARTIN SONKSEN

Martin Sonksen, son of Paul and Dora Jochimsen Sonksen, was born in Clinton County, Iowa on April 27, 1893. He lived his youth, attended rural school and grew to young manhood in this vicinity. He entered the Armed Forces to serve in World War 1 in 1917 and served in Germany. He was discharged in 1919.

He was united in marriage to Lillian Jacobs of Hartley, Iowa on August 20, 1930 at Hartley. They lived in Clinton County and in 1942 moved to Hartley where Martin was engaged in farming. In 1954 they moved into the town of Hartley and he served as custodian of Trinity United Church of Christ for 12 years.

Martin passed away at the Hartley Community Hospital at Hartley on Sept. 9, 1982 at the age of 89 years, four months and 12 days.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian of Hartley; one brother, Benny Sonksen of Charlotte; two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Herbner of Clinton and Mrs. Amanda Meggers of Charlotte; and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ of Hartley, a life member of the American Legion, a faithful member for over 60 years; served on the Board of Directors of the Sanborn Funeral Home for a number of years, and a member of the Church Brotherhood. Funeral services were held at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley Monday, September 13. Rev. Bernard Sayler officiated. Casket bearers were Paul Hunt, Herman DeYoung, Elmer Krebs, Bob West, Cornelius Elshuis and Charles Schmidt. Military rites were conducted by the Arthur Kirchhoff Post #288 of Hartley. Interment was at the Pleasant View Cemetery at Hartley, with the Sanborn Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
