Funeral services for J. Joe Wright, 78, West Liberty and formerly of Muscatine, were held July 19, 1997 at the First Church United in West Liberty, with the Rev. Ralph Farmer and Rev. Mario Padilla officiating. Burial was in the North Prairie cemetery, West Liberty.

Mr. Wright died July 15 at his home in West Liberty, following a brief illness.

The son of Loren O. and Maude Calhoun Wright, he was born Jan. 11, 1919 in Sioux City. He graduated from Lake City high school and from Iowa State University in 1942, with a bachelor of science degree. He married Ferne Ulferts on Nov. 20, 1943 in Wilmar, Minn.

Mr. Wright taught vocational agriculture in Winfield from 1942 to 1945, in Chariton from 1945 to 1951, and in West Liberty from 1952 to 1965.

In 1965 he became a farm advisor with Central State Bank of Muscatine, retiring in 1986 at executive vice president.

Mr. Wright lived in West Liberty from 1952 to 1974, when he moved to Muscatine. The couple returned to West Liberty in June 1997.

He is survived by his wife; 3 daughters, Marsha Wright Linder, North Liberty; Mary Wright Maxson, West Liberty; and Jeanie Wright Sniffin, Waterloo; 5 grandchildren; a brother, Wayne Wright, Mt. Prospect, Ill.; and 3 sisters, Vera Knudseon, El Cajon, Calif.; Leona Johnston, Atlantic; and Ethel Colvig, Durango, Colo.

Memorials may be made to Hospice, Mulford Evangelical Free church of Muscatine, or the West Liberty Christian Fellowship church.
