Vina Shaffer 1855-1916

Vina Hoffman was born in Aurora, Indiana, June 4, 1855, and died in Enid, Oklahoma Feb. 17, 1916. She was married to Enos Shaffer of Graham Grove in 1880. Their children were Mrs. Ida Bahus of Davenport, Mrs. Lulu Fairchilds of Enterprise, Oregon, Encer of Silvis, Illinois, Carrie and Ariam at home and Blanch, who died in infancy. Mr. Shaffer died July 7, 1911, and was buried at West Liberty.

Mrs. Shaffer attempted to foster a fire with kerosene, the can exploded, wrapped in flames she ran screaming from the house and before assistance could arrive she was so badly burned that she died about 11:00 o'clock. The explosion occurred at 1:30 p.m.

In her last hours, Mrs. Shaffer admonished her family and those about her to be brave and meet her in heaven. Mrs. Shaffer was an active member of the W.R.C. and Presbyterian church at the time of her death.

The funeral occurred at the home in Enid at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, 1916. The floral display was profuse. The remains were taken to West Liberty, Iowa, and laid to rest beside those of her husband Sunday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m.
