Terribly injured at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elmer Faires, Mathias M. Markle died shortly afterwards, his skull having been fractured.

The pioneer's fatal accident happened at West Liberty, were he fell from the back porch steps at Mrs. Faires' home.

Mr. Markle would have been 91, had he been spared until January, 1924.

He was an early pioneer of Muscatine county, having come to southeastern Iowa from Toronto, Canada in 1861. He had lived on a farm between West Branch and Springdale, until about two years ago, when he went to West Liberty to make his home with his daughters, Mrs. Faires and Mrs. Anna Jayne.

Surviving are seven other children, his wife having passed away fifteen years ago.

Funeral services were held from the Faires home, Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 24th, at 2:30. Rev. Lloyd Tennant officiated.

4 November 1923 - West Branch Times

Matthias Markle, youngest of ten children born to Abram and Ann Markle, was born in Toronto, Canada, Jan. 9, 1838. He worked with his father in the great lumber mills in Canada and grew to manhood and was married to Harriet McCormick, daughter of Doctor Isaac McCormick, on February 9, 1859.

He came to Iowa in 1860 with his wife and bought and settled on a farm near West Liberty. Seven years later they bought a farm a few miles east of West Branch. Here they resided over forty years and was the old home where they raised their nine children, all of whom are living--Ann, now Mrs. Jaynes; Tacie, now Mrs. Albert York; John; Callie, now Mrs. Stonebreaker; Clara, now Mrs. Hill; Will; Mae, now Mrs. Hardin; Ida, now Mrs. Eustick; Hattie, now Mrs. Elmer Faires.

In 1908 the wife died, the son Will and his wife on the farm made a home for father. In 1921 he came to town and about this time was stricken with pneumonia, the only illness of his entire life, as far as he knew. 90 years old and not a doctor called except at this time. Since this illness he has made his home with his daughters, Anna Jaynes and Mrs. Elmer Faires. The end came without warning on Sunday, Oct. 21, 1923, being 90 years, 9 months and 12 days old. He leaves the children above mentioned beside a great number of people who have met and respected him for many years.

His life was long and a useful one. No one ever in need with a call for assistance but that there always came a ready response, and many a young couple starting out in life found help and advice and encouragement from his big, kind and loving heart. The only church near home was not of his faith and so he never was identified with the neighbor church, yet many will ever recall the good deeds of a loving father, friend and neighbor.

Funeral services at the Elmer Faries home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30. Music of special numbers selected by members of the family, sung by the male quartet, Rev. Tennant of the Methodist church preaching the sermon. Interment in Oakridge cemetery.
