Muscatine Journal January 4, 1906

The death of George A. Schaefer occurred at his home on Lucas street this morning at 3 o’clock after two days’ severe illness. Mr. Schaefer had been ailing for some time but was not confined to bed until the past two days. The cause of his death was pleurisy and pneumonia.

With the death of Mr. Schaefer another old resident is numbered with the departed and those who came here and helped to build up the city are being called one by one. Had Mr. Schaefer lived until March next he would of attained the age of 65 years.

He was born in Bavarian, Germany, in 1841, and came to this city, with his parents in 1852, where he resided ever since. He was one of the old respected citizens of the city, having come here, when things were much different from the present day conveniences.

For years he was a dealer in groceries and provisions on Lucas street and was also proprietor of a brick yard on the same street. He was a member of St. Mary’s church and was well known by the younger inhabitants of the city as well as the older people. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Schaefer, and eight children, five sons and three daughters. They are: George and Joe, of Chicago; Frank, Charlie and Ed. of this city, and Mrs. O. O’Hager, of Lincoln, Nebraska; Mrs. A. J. Fuller and Mrs. Fred Millies, of this city.
