Edwin L. McColm Dies Suddenly – Stroke Fatal to Business Leader Here – head of Large Store taken by Death at 63.

Edwin L. McColm, 63, head of McColm and company and one of Muscatine’s leading business men for more than 30 years died suddenly at his home, 1314 Mulberry avenue, at 9:45 p.m. Friday after suffering a stroke of apoplexy.

Mrs. McColm’s death was completely unexpected. Although he had been suffering from high blood pressure, his general health had been satisfactory. Friday morning, he dressed to go to the store as usual but complained of a peculiar feeling. Mrs. McColm told The Journal. A physician was called and he ordered Mr. McColm to bed. The stroke of apoplexy and the end came suddenly at night.

Born in Muscatine.

Mr. McColm was born in Muscatine Oct. 30, 1869, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. McColm. He spent virtually his entire life here although he resided for a brief periods at West Liberty and LeMars and for a short time was associated with Marshall Field and company at Chicago.

He received his education in the public schools here and went into business with his father, James L. McColm, in the McColm Dry Goods company where the present Woolworth store is now located about 30 years ago. When the store was moved into the new building at the corner of Iowa avenue and Second street in 1917, known as the Laurel building, the name was changed to McColm and company, with E. L. MColm the proprietor.

Married in 1903

Mr. McColm married Miss Laura Musser here Nov. 18, 1903. One daughter was born to them in 1907, the baby living but a few days. Mr. McColm’s mother died in 1911 and his father some years later.

He was a member of the Woodmen and Elks lodges, of the First Methodist Episcopal church and was prominently identified with the Masonic lodge.

In the Masonic lodge he joined Haweye lodge No. 30 Feb. 26, 1901, and entered his apprentice degree March 5, 1901. He took (continued on page 7, cols 4) his Fellowcraft degree April 9, 1901, and became a Master Mason April 30, 1901. On July 1, 1901, Hawkeye lodge joined with Iowa lodge No. 2, and he became a member of Iowa lodge.

Services Tuesday.

He was a member of Washington chapter No. 4, R. A. M. since 1903 and took his Mark Master degree Jan. 30, 1903. His Past Master degree came March 6, 1903 and his Most Excellent Master degree April 3, 1903. He became a Royal Arch Mason April 17, 1903, and a member of Webb Council No. 18 , R. and S. M. July 1, 1903. He received all these degrees July 23, 1903. Mr. McColm was a member of DeMolay Commandery No. 1 and received the Order of Red Cross April 7, 1904, and the Order of the Temple April 13, 1904. He was also a member of Zerapath Consistory and Kaaba temple A. A. O. N. M. S. of Davenport.

Surviving in addition to Mrs. McColm, are an uncle, A. G. McColm, Washington, D. C., and an aunt Mrs. Hillis Ady, Moorhead, Iowa.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First Methodist Episcopal church. The Rev. B. F. Schwartz, pastor, will be in charge, assisted by the Rev. George Blagg of New Sharon, former Muscatine pastor. Services at the grave in Greenwood cemetery will be private. The Fairbanks Home of Funerals is in charge of arrangements.
