MRS. MARY HOFFMAN PASSES AWAY HERE; WAS 85 YEARS OLD

Mrs. Mary Etta Hoffman, 85, a resident of this vicinity for many years, died at 12:45 a.m. Saturday at her home on East Third street after a few days’ serious illness and several months of failing health.

Her body was taken to the Meyerhoff & Pitman funeral home to await the funeral which was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Advent Christian church. The Rev. G.A. Arthur, pastor of the church, conducted the rites, and singing was by a quarter composed of Mrs. C.A. Penwell, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Marshal and A.M. Mitchell.

The following friends served as pallbearers: O.L. Figgins, E.Y. Rice, T.E. Wallace, Harold Peters, H.C. Lindell and C.A. Penwell. Burial was made in the Villisca cemetery.

Mary Etta Southwick was born March 15, 1848, in Cattaraugus county, New York. She was married May 29, 1865, to William Washburn and in the next year they moved to the state of Michigan. Their three children were born there. The family moved to Iowa, locating in this vicinity in 1875. With the exception of a few years spent with her daughters in Washington, D.C., and Nebraska, Mrs. Hoffman had resided here continuously since that year.

Mr. Washburn died December 26, 1902. On June 15, 1905, Mrs. Washburn was married to Alexander Hoffman and they made their home near Villisca. Mr. Hoffman preceded his wife in death on Aug. 18, 1927.

Mrs. Hoffman is survived by her three children, who are Mrs. Evelyn W. Towie, Bassett, Neb., William D. Washburn, Villisca, and Mrs. Myrtle W. Miller, Washington, D.C. She is survived also by three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mrs. Hoffman was baptized into the Advent Christian church while living in Michigan and has been an active member of the local church.
