OBITUARY

James Beard was born in Brown Co., Ohio, March 4th, 1818, and died at his home in Villisca, May 4th, 1898, aged 80 years and 2 mo. He moved from Brown Co. to Hillsboro, Highland Co., Ohio in early life, and was married at that place to Mrs. Mary E. Powers Jan. 8th, 1844. In the family there were 3 boys and 7 girls. Those living are Asa G. Beard, Mrs. Geo. Graves, Mrs. Anna Ashmore, W.B. Beard, Mrs. Mary Marcell and Mrs. Higgins, of Villisca, Mrs. S. Jane Willett, of Hoyt, Ia., and Geo. E. Beard, of Sedalia, Mo. Deceased removed from Ohio to Ill., in 1868 and to Iowa, Sept. 1874 where he has lived ever since. His wife died Nov. 2nd, 1885 since which his daughter Mrs. Marcell has lived with and cared for him in south Villisca. He enlisted in the service of his country as a volunteer, Oct. 1863, in Co. H, 12th Ohio cavalry, and served until mustered out at the close of the war. He was converted and joined the M.E. church during the pastorate of Rev. A.T. Jeffrey since which time he has made efforts to grow in grace, and prepare for the world to come. He has not been able to attend church for about 4 years on account of age and blindness. He was patient in his years of confinement to his home, and never murmured in sickness, saying “God’s will be done.” The funeral services were held by Rev. Hohanshelt at the M.E. church, May 6, at 11 a.m. The G.A.R. Post attended and escorted the remains to their last resting place on the hill where they were laid, with appropriate cremonics (sic) by the side of many comrades gone before, to await the final roll call.
