April 2, 1917 --- September 15, 1990

David Orveal Mann, Rodney, Iowa, died unexpectedly at his home in Rodney, Saturday, September 15, 1990. Death came at the age of 73 years 5 months and 13 days. He was born April 2, 1917, at Salina, Kansas, the son of Edward and Maria (Shively) Mann. He married Alice Phillip April 17, 1936, at Salina. He was a veteran of World War II. The couple moved to Rodney from California in 1968. He had served as mayor of Rodney for 16 years before retiring for a year. He became mayor last year. Mr. Mann was a Methodist. He was a member of Leslie F. Seaton Post 666, American Legion, of Smithland, Disabled American Veterans of Sioux City and SIMPCO. He was a member of the Board of West Central Development Corp. of Harlan and served as adviser with the Monona County Board of Supervisors.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, of Rodney; a son. David Leroy Mann and his wife, Barbara of Wichita, Kansas: a daughter Emma Jean and her husband, Art Castle of Smithland; a sister, Irene Johnson of Concordia, Kansas; six grandchildren. David Mann. Christopher Mann and Tracy Grabtree, all of Wichita, Kansas, Connie Weikel of Whiting, and Kathy Castle and Debbie Castle, both of Smithland; and a great-grandchild, Andrew Weikel of Whiting. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 18, 1990 at the Rodney United Church of Christ with Rev. Louis Aitken officiating. Mrs. Ellen Harbeck was the organist. Honorary Bearers were David Mann, Chris Mann, Stan Petersen, Lee Weikel and John Grabtree. Active bearers were Jim Davis, Max Smith, Claire Hewitt, Gale Volk, Pete Collins and Dwain Schmidt. Interment was in the Little
Sioux Township Cemetery at Smithland with Military Graveside Services by Leslie F. Seaton Post No. 666, American Legion of Smithland, Norman Stickney, Commander. Arrangements were by the Willman Funeral Home, Rodney, Iowa.

The Rodney community and surrounding areas were saddened by the sudden death of Dave Mann Saturday, September 15. 1990. He had lived in Rodney 22 years. He was Mayor of Rodney for 17 years. During those years he and his wife, Alice have been active in community affairs. Always ready to help. Dave will be missed.
