In Response To: Info Needed on Samuel J. TRAUGER (Rich Lowe)

Samuel J. Trauger is buried in the Cherokee Mental Health Institute Cemetery [renamed the Beacon Hollow Cemetery in 2002]. He died December 13, 1904. Cherokee is in Cherokee County, Iowa.

The hospital was opened for patients on August 15, 1902 under the name "Cherokee Lunatic Asylum." On August 26, 1902, 306 patients were transferred from Independence and on August 28, 1902, 252 from Clarinda. These patients were brought by special trains and met with teams and hayracks at the end of the Illinois Central Railroad spur and transported to the hospital. Samuel was most likely one of these transferees.
