Herman J. Doidge, age 93, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2024, at the Maple Heights Nursing Home of Mapleton, Iowa.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, Iowa. Father Richard D. Ball will officiate. Inurnment will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery of Mapleton, Iowa. Military Rites will be conducted by the Loren Hollister Post No. 496 of the American Legion of Mapleton, Iowa and the Grimsley-Thayer Post No. 502 of the American Legion of Castana, Iowa.

A Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m., on Friday, March 8, 2024, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, Iowa.

The Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Memorials in Herman’s name may be directed to the family to donate to the local American Legions in Mapleton and Castana as well as be used for masses in Herman’s honor.

Herman Joseph Doidge was born on March 12, 1930, in Mapleton, Iowa, the firstborn son of Edward and Helen (McGrain) Doidge. He was raised on farms in the Castana, Iowa, area and graduated from Castana High School in 1947. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and served four years, including one year in Korea during that conflict.

In 1951 Herman and Margaret Schick were married and to that union were born sons Thomas and Stephen and daughter Monica. After his military tour, Herman began a career in Federal service from which he retired in 1991.

In 1985 Herman and Susan Kasinger were united in marriage. They shared many hobbies including restoring vintage cars and tractors, playing tennis, working in his garden, and watching Western movies.

He is survived by his wife Susan Doidge of Mapleton, IA; sons Thomas Doidge of Mapleton, IA and Stephen (Colleen) Doidge of Fresno, CA; daughter Monica (Larry) Oakes of Marysville, CA; 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; brothers Jerome (Rosalind) Doidge of Laguna Beach, CA and Leroy (Diane) Doidge of Waukee, IA; sister Virginia Bates of Riverside, CA; extended family and friends.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Helen Doidge; sister and brother-in-law MaryAnn and Gerald Miller; and stepson Thomas Kasinger.
