Dorothy A. (Henshaw) Johnson, 89, of Onawa, Iowa passed away Thursday, July 21, 2022 at Burgess Health Center, Onawa, Iowa.

A private family service and celebration of life service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Dorothy was born August 18, 1932 near Sioux City, Iowa on the family farm, the daughter of Delbert and Dorothy (Hughes) Henshaw. She was the oldest child of three children. Dorothy graduated from Leeds High School in 1950 to a small graduating class. Starting at the age of fourteen, Dorothy had a job at Neisner’s Dime Store in downtown Sioux City and Wellers Fish and Tackle during the summer before heading off to teach. She started working at 7:00 A.M. and started watching the clock at 7:10 A.M. She hated that job. She worked one week at the Johnson’s Cookie factory.

Dorothy attended Wayne State College in August 1950. Her parents told her she could go to school for four years, but she didn’t want to be in debt to them so she entered the 2-year teaching certificate program. She lived in Niehardt dorm. She drove her parents 39 Chevy. She would charge 50 cents for a ride back to the city. Each week she was given a $10 allowance from her parents to help her buy food and pay for laundry. She finished the teaching certificate in 1952. Dorothy completed her degree and graduated in August 1969 from Morningside College.

Her first teaching job was in Cherokee, Iowa. Dorothy taught 2nd grade and lived in a house in Cherokee with three other teachers. She taught three years in Cherokee.

Dorothy met Myron at the Chesterfield Dance Club in Sioux City, Iowa. It was a Friday night in September, 1953, while Myron was in the area for an Odebolt football game. Myron and Dorothy were married July 10, 1955 in Sioux City, Iowa. They moved to Onawa, Iowa. Myron passed away April 12, 2020.

Dorothy taught 2nd grade in Castana, Iowa for one year. She started the first Summer Reading Program for Monona County. Dorothy taught for West Monona Community School for thirty-three years. Dorothy retired in June 1994, with thirty-seven years of teaching. In retirement, she cared for her Jewel, traveled internationally and in the United States, and visited family. Dorothy enjoyed bowling, and traveling with the family every summer.

Survivors include her children, Joyce (Robert) Keele of Loveland, Colorado, Janet (Terry) Mann of Castana, Iowa, and Judy (John) Bahns of Brentwood, California; special friend, Lois Mahoney of Onawa, Iowa; grandchildren, Jacque Keele of Lakewood, Colorado, Julie Keele of Hillsboro, Oregon, Jean (Derek) Ward of Evans, Colorado, Jenna (Adam) Cook of Nemaha, Iowa, Jewel (Michael) Gibler of Castana, Iowa, Jackson (Estrella) Bahns of San Francisco, California, Jeffrey Bahns of Brentwood, California, and Joshua Bahns of Brentwood, California; great-grandchildren, Myron Cook, Merritt Cook, Terrence Cook, and Lila Cook; sister, Joyce Franklin of Phoenix, Arizona; brother, Tony Henshaw of Kansas; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Myron Johnson; parents, Delbert and Dorothy (Hughes) Henshaw; parents-in-law, Miron and Hattie (Haustetter) Johnson; and grand-daughter, Jayna Marie Mann.
