George Landon Vandivort 1936 - 2018

George Landon Vandivort, age 82, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2018, at the Pleasant View Care Center of Whiting, Iowa.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, Iowa. Father Richard D. Ball will officiate. Committal Services will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery of Mapleton, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 6:45 p.m., followed by the Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m., on Monday, September 17, 2018, at the Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa. The Armstrong - Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

George Landon Vandivort, the son of George F. and Hilda (Peterson) Vandivort, was born on August 12, 1936, in Moorhead, IA. He grew up on a farm and attended school in Moorhead and Dunlap.

On September 28, 1957, George married Carol J. Archer in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, IA. In 1958, George graduated from the U.S. Trade School in Kansas City, KS, with an Auto Mechanics Certificate. In this same year the couple would relocate to Carroll, IA and George started working for Bill Burgess Motors of Carroll, IA.

In 1960, the family moved to Mapleton, IA, where George was employed at MAC’S Chevrolet as a mechanic. With a passion for parts and service, George started at American Auto Parts in 1977, which is now known as NAPA, retiring in 2000.

George and Carol enjoyed many road trip on their Honda motorcycle. The couple belonged to the Western Iowa Cycle Riders and the Iowa Retreads. The love of traveling was in George’s blood and he would pass this love on to his children throughout the years. He was also a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, IA.

George enjoyed working on race cars, attending drag races, playing cards and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Carol of Mapleton, IA; children Dave (Ann) Vandivort of Lee’s Summit, MO, Bonnie Petersen of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Mike Vandivort of Alton, IA, Mark (Brandy Jendro) Vandivort of Underwood, IA; 9 grandchildren: Jennifer (Bryan) Beltz, Jessica (Carlos) Montiel, David (Tiffany) Vandivort, Tanya (Thane) Johnson, Thomas (Loni) Petersen, Ryan (Amber) Petersen, Emily (Oraefo) James, Lauren (Kyle) Johnston, and Zachary Vandivort; 10 great-grandchildren: Anna Beltz, Kennedy Montiel, baby girl Montiel on the way, Hope Johnson, Grace Johnson, Drew Johnson, Brenna Petersen, Dalton Petersen, Presley Petersen, Luella Petersen, and Ezeekiel James; sister Roberta (Don) Baker of Council Bluffs, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

George is preceded in death by his parents George and Hilda Vandivort; brother Frank (JoAnn) Vandivort; sisters Thelma (Badge) Dunkeson and Doratt (Paul) Baker; and brother-in-law Don Baker.
