Deceased Lady Was Born in Ute

Rites Held Tuesday, Last Week, For Mrs. Lucille (Hoffman) Bearce – Burial in Onawa Cemetery

(From the Onawa Sentinel)

The community was shocked and saddened Saturday afternoon when it learned of the sudden passing of one of its citizens, Mrs. Lucille Bearce.

Although Mrs. Bearce had not been in the best of health for several months, the sudden passing was unexpected to the family and her many friends.

The deceased was a woman who possessed rare qualities, she was quiet and unassuming, charitable and straight forward, her words were kind and cheerful and acts of kindness were her delight. Her leaving has cast a shadow of deep gloom over the community and the deep grief of her family is shared by all who knew her. She devoted her entire married to the comforts of her family, and her neighbors and friends were never at loss for a helping hand when they were in distress.

Edith Lucille Hoffman was born August 13, 1896, to Andrew and Cora B. Hoffman in Ute where she lived until moving to Onawa with her parents in 1907.

On June 22, 1916, she was united in marriage to Lawrence D. Bearce and to this union were born six children, all of whom survive to cherish the beloved memory of one who was fine, who sacrificed and fought only for the benefits of her children. Day after day, she struggled and worked to give her children all the things which they desired and her valiant fight for life the last few months was only that she might be able to help her family and make them stronger so that they might better cope with life’s struggles and hardships. After the death of her husband her task was heavier. However, her faith in God and her love for her family kept her fighting and living.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church in Onawa. Her faith in the crucified and resurrected Christ was her strength throughout life. She will be missed but relatives and a legion of friends rejoice in her victory, that she kept faith and won the crown of righteousness.

She is survived by her six children; Ruth, Don, CoraJean, Althea, Glenn and John; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Hoffman; three brothers, Frank of Sioux City, John and Fred of Onawa.
