Jesse Oliver Masters, son of Thos. And Ann Weeks Masters, was born at Raycott, Somersetshire, England, on May 25, 1861, and passed away at his farm in Center Township, Monona County, Iowa on January 12, 1939. He attended Shebear College in Devonshire and in 1880 in company with his parents and sister he came to the United States. The first winter was spent in Evanston, Illinois and in the spring a trip was made to Kansas with the idea of purchasing land and settling. This prospect did not meet with the approval of the family and they journeyed to western Iowa, purchasing a large tract in Center Township upon which Mr. Masters continued to spend the remainder of his life. On January 15, 1896, he was united in marriage to Julia Ann Perrin and to them were born two sons, Donald and Tom, who with the widow remain to mourn their father’s passing. There is also one sister, Mrs. Annie Hawthorn, of Castana. Mr. Masters was a quiet, well-informed man, taking an interest in neighborhood, national and international affairs. He joined the Methodist Church at Center in 1896. His kindly advise and pleasing smile will be remembered by his many friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were conducted from the St. John’s Methodist Church in Mapleton on Saturday afternoon, Rev. Arthur Schuldt officiating, and interment was made in the family plot in the Center Cemetery. Mrs. Schuldt sang two beautiful numbers at the church services. Pallbearers included relatives of the deceased, H.B. and F.W. Hawthorn of Castana, John Masters and Ned Perrin of Mapleton, Fred and Keith Strange of Sioux City.
