Mrs. J.E. McNamara

Edith Belle Hathaway, daughter of Julius and Clara B. Hathaway, was born on the old Hathaway farm in Kennebec Township, Monona County, on April 6, 1880 and passed away at Sioux City, Iowa, January 10, 1939, at the age of 58 years, 9 months and 4 days.

Her early childhood was spent on the farm where she began her schooling at Arcola. On Mr. Hathaway being elected County Treasurer the family moved to Onawa and resided there a number of years. She graduated from the Onawa High School and from Grinell College. She was united in marriage to J.E. McNamara, November 23, 1903. They resided in Chicago, Illinois, for several years and then returned to Monona County. Both husband and wife gave much of their time to the publishing of newspapers. She resided in Castana for about 30 years, being actively identified with every movement for social benefit.

She was the mother of two daughters, Dorothy M. Sammons and Esther K. Forker, both of Sioux City, who rendered the full devotion of their love to her care and comfort during her last days.

There are four grandchildren, Marjorie, Owen and Wanda Sammons and Billy Mac Forker. Besides her children and grandchildren, she leaves her husband, J.E. McNamara of Castana, who was loving and loyal unto her death. Besides her immediate family, there are left her aged mother, Mrs. J. M. Hathaway of Turin; two brothers, William and Delwin Hathaway of Turin and two sisters, Mrs. J.D. Stone of Sioux City and Mrs. Arthur Whitehorn of Portage, Montana. Her father and two sisters preceded her in death.

Funeral services under the direction of Dr. H.B. Hawthorn were held Friday afternoon in the Castana Community Church.

The pallbearers were William Riley, Fred Robinson, Charles Riley, H.E. Nutt, Levi McDonald and Martin Nielson.

Interment was in the Kennebec Cemetery at Castana, under the direction of the Barnard Funeral Home of Onawa.
