Death Calls Pioneer Mother At Soldier
Mother of Mrs. O.M. Christman Passed Out of Life March 11

Mrs. Adaline Clemon, one of Soldier’s oldest citizens, passed peacefully away at her home three miles east of Soldier on Thursday, March 11, at 12:30 a.m., having been bedfast for about two weeks. She never fully recovered from an operation she under-went last fall. At the time of her death she was 78 years, 7 months and 18 days old. She was a charter member of the Soldier Valley Lutheran Church and was always a faithful worker until the later years when she became too feeble. She boarded the carpenters that built Soldier’s first church, her husband being on the building committee.

Adaline Clemon was born in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, July 13, 1859. She came to this community with her parents, Ole and Mary Severson, in the year 18669, and settled on a farm just south of the country church, where she lived until her marriage TO Martin Clemon on July 2, 1877, when they moved to the home he had prepared for her (the farm now occupied by John Nordaker.) They lived there until the year 1895, moving from there to the present farm, where she had lived 43 years at the time of her death.

Mrs. Clemon saw the hardships of pioneer life and then again when her husband died on November 24, 1907, having her with a large family of children, the oldest having left for homes of their own. The oldest boy at home then was only 14 and the youngest was 4 years old. But she always put her trust in God who always gave her strength to carry on. She said so often: “Always do the best you can and trust God for the rest.”

Mrs. Clemon is dead but the life she lived will be pleasantly remembered by her many friends for years to come.

She leaves to mourn the loss of a loving mother, nine children, three having gone on before her, as follows: Matilda and Elma, who had grown to womanhood, and Ingvold, who was a little over a year old. The children living are: Dolphin, Walter and Luella, who have been living at home with her: Olius, Arnold and Mrs. Olaf Amunson of Soldier; Victor of Kirkman, Iowa; Mrs. O.M. Christman of Ute; Mrs. Lars Anderson of Dunlap. She also leaves a brother, Samuel Severson of Viola, Idaho, besides a host of relatives and friends.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and was a member ever since it was established in 1869.

Funeral services were held from the family home and at the country church on Sunday, March 13, 1938, Rev. Hoff conducting the services. He also sang two beautiful songs at the home, namely, “I Know of a Sleep In Jesus Name,” and “In Heaven Above.” Rev. Itse of Irwin, Iowa, also gave a short talk and comforting words.

Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep,
From which none ever wakes to weep.
A calm and undisturbed repose,
Unbroken by the last of foes.
Asleep in Jesus, O how sweet,
To be for such a slumber meet,
With holy confidence to sing
That death has lost its venomed sting.
Asleep in Jesus, O for me
May such a blissful refuge be!
Securely shall my ashes lie,
And wait the summons from on high.

Those attending the funeral from out of town were: Rev. and Mrs. Itse and son, Donald, of Irwin; Mr. and Mrs. S.B. Olson and daughter of Vermillion, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Kling Olson of Centerville, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Allen Ness and daughter of Creston, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Hanson of Kirkman, Iowa – Soldier Sentinel
