Carl Leopold Klaus was born in Freistatt, West Prussia, Germany, on the 4th day of December 1856, and departed this life Friday, March 18, 1938, at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 14 days.

During the years 1890 to 1920 the deceased lived on farms near the town of Charter Oak, first in Charter Oak Township, later on in Willow Township. Since 1920 he had lived in retirement in Ute.

His passing is mourned by his widow, Mrs. Carl Klaus; eight sons, George, Carl, Henry, Gustav, William and Peter of Ute, Ernest of Onawa, and Martin of St. Louis, Missouri; four daughters, Mrs. Mathilda Schriever, Mrs. Anna Amstein and Mrs. Pauline Kuester of Ute and Miss Ida of Sioux City.
