Harold (Shorty) Conrad Conway, Whiting, Iowa, son of Eugene and Josie Miller Conway, was born October 3,1916, at Onawa, Iowa, and passed away on Saturday, November 17, 1984, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa following a long illness. Death came at the age of 68 years, 1 month, and 14 days.

At the age of three, he moved to Whiting with his family where he attended the Brooks School through 8th grade and attended the Whiting High School for three years. He graduated from Blencoe High School in 1938. He spent the last year of school with his Uncle Leonard and Celia Miller.

Harold enlisted in the U.S. Army early in 1941 and was discharged late in 1945. He served his country in the Pacific Islands during World War II from 1942 until the Japanese surrendered. During much of this time he was a gunner in the 138th Field Artillery, a unit that came to be known as "The Avengers of Batan." After the war, Harold returned to Whiting where he farmed until retiring in 1980. He was united in marriage to Alice Collett Harding on January 14.1951, at Blair. Neb.

He was active in the American Legion and was a member of Emery Johnson Post No 481. He served as Adjutant many years, service officer of Veteran Affairs and also as Post Commander. He had the honor of being elected County Commander and 9th District Vice Commander and was a member of the "40 and 8" Voiture 72 in Sioux City. Always active in community affairs, Harold served several terms on the Whiting City Council, was County Chairman of the Democratic Party, President of the Whiting Cooperative Board of Directors, a member of the Board of Directors of Pleasant View Nursing Home, was a County Commissioner of Veteran's Assistance and served on the Monona County Board of Social Services.

He was affiliated with the Church of Christ at Whiting.

He is survived by his wife, Alice, a daughter, Mrs. Rolland (Kathy) Roberts and three grandchildren, Timothy John, Thomas James, and Tamara Jean, all of Dunlap, Iowa, two brothers, John of Fort Calhoun and Bernard of Whiting, three sisters, Mrs. Neal (Doris) Funkhouser of Whiting, Mrs. Ruth Heard of Rockford, Iowa, and Mrs. Oscar (Mildred) Dahl of Kansas City, Mo., and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 20, 1984 at the Church of Christ, Whiting, Iowa, with Evangelist Robert Butt officiating. The organist was Mrs. E. B. Matthews and the soloist, Mrs. Nancy Brenden, sang "In the Garden" and "How Great Thou Art."

Honorary bearers were Donnie Anderson, Charles Funkhouser. Dr John Garred, E B. Matthews and Glen Percival.

Active casket bearers were James Hime, S. T. Skidmore, Rex Kelley, Don Richardson, LeRoy Baker and Steven Seward.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa, with Military Graveside Services by Emery Johnson American Legion Post No 481, Whiting, Iowa, James J Werling, Commander. Arrangements were by the Person Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
