Leonard L. Burgess, 85, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 25, 2018, at the First Christian Church in Onawa, with Pastor Michael Lewis officiating. Military honors will be provided by the David McNeill American Legion Post #129 of Onawa, Monona County VFW Post #2694, and the United States Army. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, May 24, 2018, at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Leonard was born on October 11, 1932, in Onawa, Iowa, the son of Robert C. and Marjorie (Bennett) Burgess. He served in the United States Army from September 11, 1950, until his honorable discharge on June 7, 1952.

He married Betty Jean Gray, and four children were born to this union. On December 24, 1973, he was united in marriage with Deanna (Raymond) Gibson, which brought one daughter to this union.

Leonard worked as a police officer for the City of Onawa for several years, and then worked for King Transfer in Onawa until his retirement.

He enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage, attending auctions, shopping, hunting, gardening, and watching Westerns, especially those with John Wayne. He was a member of the Friends of Discovery in Onawa for over twenty years. Most of all, Leonard enjoyed spending time with his wife and his family.

Survivors include his wife, Deanna Burgess of Onawa, IA; children, Michael and Susan Burgess of Onawa, IA, William and Rose Burgess of Larimore, ND, Terry and Maria Burgess of South Sioux City, NE, Denise and Brian Jennings of Onawa, IA, and Amy Burgess of Littleton, CO; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth Wayne Burgess of Onawa, IA; mother-in-law, Lolly Raymond of Onawa, IA; and many nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marjorie Burgess; brother, Robert D. Burgess; sister, Betty Wymore; father-in-law, Frank Raymond; son-in-law, Mike McCarthy; sisters-in-law, Frankie Torticill and Violet Burgess; nephew, Scott Poole; granddaughter, Paige Reddington; and great-granddaughter, Addison Burgess.
