Elmer C. Mordhorst, age 94, of Denison, IA, (formerly of Ute, IA) passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2017, at the Denison Care Center of Denison, Iowa.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Ute, Iowa. Rev. Chris LaBoube will officiate; with Committal Services following in the St. Clair Township Cemetery of Ute, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at the Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home of Ute, Iowa. The Armstrong - Van Houten Funeral Home of Ute, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Elmer Clarence Mordhorst, the son of William and Clara (Johnson) Mordhorst, was born on a farm two miles south of Ute, IA on September 28, 1923. He attended country school until the 8th grade and graduated from Ute High School with the class of 1942. Elmer was baptized on October 28, 1923, and confirmed on April 5, 1936, in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Ute, IA where he was a lifetime member.

On January 8, 1944, Elmer was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Luetta Elinor Christensen in the Charter Oak Lutheran Parsonage by Rev. Hugo Neiting. They started farming six miles south of Ute for a year and then purchased an 80 acre farm between Ute and Soldier in 1945. They lived there 25 years farming and raising purebred hogs and having hog sales on the farm.

In February of 1959, Elmer was selected as Outstanding Young Farmer in the Siouxland area by the Sioux City Journal Chamber of Commerce. He developed a respectable farming program and built up a purebred swine herd that was recognized throughout the U.S. In 1965, he received the Iowa Master Seed Stock Producer Award and the National Certification Award. Showing hogs at state fairs in the Midwest and the National Type Conference led to many champions. Elmer was inducted into the Iowa Spotted Breeders Hall of Fame in 1993.

Elmer enjoyed being a positive role model by sharing his knowledge of agriculture and livestock as a 4-H leader for 13 years. He was actively involved in his community, serving on the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church School Board, Ute Community School Board, and the Charter Oak-Ute Community School Board for 13 years.

Elmer was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be missed by all. His family values, work ethic and spiritual guidance have been an inspiration to his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brother Lavern, son Russell Mordhorst, and his loving wife of 71 years Luetta Mordhorst.

Left to cherish his memory are his sister Elsie Dutler of Holstein, IA; two sons Donald (Teresa) Mordhorst and Dennis (Barb) Mordhorst all of Soldier, IA; daughter Patricia (George) Wallis of San Antonio, TX; nine grandchildren: Michael and Cheryl Mordhorst, Matthew and Kristi Mordhorst, Dave and Jill Klinker, Aaron and Debra Gress, Jason and Jenny Neddermeyer, Jared and Robin Neddermeyer, Kyle and Angela Wallis, Kent and Heather Wallis, Mark and Jennifer Wallis; 22 great-grandchildren and two great - great grandchildren.
