Matthew L. White, aged 61 years, died at his residence in Brownville, the 18th inst.

Brother White was born November 2, 1818, in Penobscot, Hancock, Co., State of Maine; was married to Phebe K. Hinckley in 1842. The family settled in this town in the fall of 1857, where they have remained to this date.

When Mr. White died it may be most truly said, "Mark the perfect man and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace." Through long, weary months of pain he had been traveling to the grave, and he knew it, but no murmur was heard, no complaint heard. To him death became familiar. Cheerfully he bent to his hard trial; hopefully he trusted in his God.

Brother White was a modest, upright, kind man. Those who knew him best loved him most. To the best of his ability he met the duties of husband, father, citizen, friend. He was a safe man to rely upon - prudent, cautious, honest, sincere, loving and very lovable. When he died strong men wept and mourned for him.

Six years he has been a faithful member of the M.E. Church. We drop the tear of sympathy with the bereaved wife and sorrowing family of five - two sons and three daughters. We mourn for our departed friend, saying: "The Lord gave, the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord."

One by one the old settlers of the county are passing away and going to that better land beyond the skies. We are thus reminded that great changes have taken place since first these old pioneers took up their homes in this county.

Last Friday M.L. White died at his farm home near Brownville, where he had resided for the past quarter of a century, aged 61 years.

Mr. White was an industrious farmer, and was greatly esteemed by all his neighbors and friends. He was a good citizen, a true man, a christian father, husband and friend, whose death is regretted by all.

What more enduring eulogy to his memory? We have known him for many years, and during that time we have never heard ought to reproach his memory. He led a quiet, industrious life, and his hand and heart was ever open to give assistance and encouragement to the weary, the needy and the destitute. We have often felt the strength of his friendship, and it is with sincere sorrow that we pen these few words of tribute to the memory of a good, true friend, whose journey here has ended, and who has gone home to enjoy the reward promised the faithful.
