Edgar Wilfred Dorow died peacefully on Thursday, December 7, 2017, at his home in Osage.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday December 16, 2017, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Cindy S. Krause officiating. Private inurnment at Osage Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday December 15, 2017, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.

Edgar was born November 14, 1919, at the rural farm home of his parents, William F. and Martha (Berghoefer) Dorow, who lived northeast of Garner, in Concord Township. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Edgar graduated from Ventura Consolidated Community High School, graduating as valedictorian, in 1938. Edgar served in the United States Army Air Force in World War II 1942-46. He served in the financial offices in Algeria and was discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant.

After the war, he attended Iowa State University in Ames, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry in 1948. He was the Extension Director of Dickinson County from 1948-52.

In Spirit Lake he met his future wife, Dorcas Byro. They married in Eagle Grove on June 28, 1953. They had two children, Martha in 1958 and Joel in 1960. In June, 1952, Edgar moved to Osage, and served as Extension Director of Mitchell County until his retirement in 1983.

In his work, Edgar was always present at the Mitchell County Fair, supported the 4-H programs, and forwarded best practices in agriculture and animal husbandry. He was a leader in a state-wide well water decontamination program in the 1970’s.

Edgar’s community activities included serving as a board member and president of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, as well as Sunday School teacher and superintendent. Edgar was president of the Mitchell County chapter of the American Cancer Society, and county chairman of the annual CROP walk fundraiser. He was a long-term member of the Osage Rotary Club.

After his retirement, Edgar continued his community activities and devoted much of his time to a small acreage in Howard County. Edgar also traveled extensively with his wife on international good-will tours. One of his more memorable trips was leading a group of Iowa farm leaders on a world-wide ‘People-to-People’ farm tour in China, Russia and Europe.

Edgar is survived by his daughter, Martha Dorow of St. Paul, Minnesota; his son, Joel (Miriam Chilton) Dorow, of Montclair, New Jersey; and grandchildren, Shaina and Samuel, both of Washington, DC.; two brothers, Maynard (Shirley) of Arden Hills, Minnesota and Winton (Tavita), of Lubbock, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorcas Dorow; his brother, Norbert; his sisters: Hilda, Elda and Lois.
