John Vern Mulder

May 11, 1948 - December 2, 2017

John Mulder, age 69, passed away at his home in Riceville, Iowa, on Saturday December 2, 2017.

John Vern Mulder was born May 11, 1948 to Merle and Carol (Knott) at his grandmother’s home in Hartley, Iowa. He attended local schools and graduated from Hartley High School in 1966. John was united in marriage to Debra Hansen on February 14 1982 at First Covenant Church in Mason City, Iowa.

John received his A.A. degree from Iowa Lakes Community College in 1968 and furthered his education at Mankato State where he earned his B.S degree in 1970 in accounting. John earned a Nursing Home Administration degree at Des Moines Area Community College.

John worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, and as a nursing home administrator mentor. John was the administrator of the Riceville Family Care & Therapy Center for thirteen years. He worked in numerous nursing homes and hospitals in South Dakota, Minnesota, Missouri and Iowa.

He was an active member of his community as a member of Kiwanis, Riceville Community Club, Trees Forever, Safe Walking for Kids, Community Visioning, served as head of the circus for Wapsi Days and started Wapsi Wheelchair Races. John was a frequent blood donor at Riceville Blood Drives and worked with the Breakfast with Santa Event.

He had a passion for genealogy, having traced his family back as far as the mid 1600’s. Having a file with over 7,000 names related to him and his wife. John enjoyed writing and printed a book “Shots Fired.”

Survivors include his wife Debra of Riceville, a son Adam Mulder of Marion, Iowa, a daughter Casie Mulder of Cedar Rapids, a granddaughter Tehya Mulder of Florida, a grandson Caiden Mulder of Cedar Rapids and a step grandson Damion Roleberg of Florida, three siblings Marlene Mulder of Des Moines, Iowa, Richard Mulder of Hartley and Kara Mason also of Hartley, Iowa. Also surviving is Jean (Knott) Muhs of Arkansas and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a niece Tammie Craft.
