Johannes Bastian Larson was born April 1, 1828 at the Eide farm, Halsnoy, Fjelberg, Hordaland, Norway to Lars Eide Bastiansen (b August 10, 1794 Norway, d July 19, 1869 Norway) and Britha Johannesdatter (b 1799 Odda, Kvinnherad, Hordaland, Norway), the second of their nine children.

Johannes was baptized on April 3, 1828 at Fjelberg Parish, Hordaland, Norway on April 3, 1828. Birth/ baptismsl records at Norwegian Digital Archives for Fjelberg, Hordaland, Norway 1822 - 1834, pg 43, entry # 42.

Halsnoy is an island east of Leirvik. Leirvik is north of Haugesund on the west coast of Norway in Hordaland County and was commonly called Hardanger.

Johannes married Anna Marie Andersdatter on December 27, 1854 at Eide, Norway. (Anna b March 26, 1833 Hordaland, Norway to Anders ? from Eide, d 1883 Otranto, Iowa). Marriage record found in the Norwegian Digital Archives for Fjelberg, Hordaland, Norway 1851-1867, pg 211, entry # 48. Johannes age 26 and Anna age 22.

The couple left Norway on March 13, 1856 to emigrate to America with a daughter. Emigration record found in the Norwegian Digital Archives on-line for Fjelberg, Hordaland, Norway 1851-1867, pg 349, entries # 7 - 9: Johannes Larsen Eide born 1828, Anna Andersdatter Eide born 1833 and daughter Britha born 1855.

Believe the couple had 11 children:

Betsey Britha (b abt 1859 Fayette, Iowa, married Martin G Eide March 13, 1883 Osage, Iowa, d January 5, 1943 Crow Wing, Minnesota);

Andrew Johannesen (b October 8, 1862 Otranto, Mitchell, Iowa, d May 5, 1900 Worth, Iowa);

Margarethe (b abt 1865 Otranto, Mitchell, Iowa);

Bernt (b abt 1866 Otranto, Iowa);

Anna (b abt 1868 Otranto, IA);

Peter (b abt 1869 Otranto, Iowa);

Gurine (b abt 1871 Otranto, Iowa);

Johanne Josie (b February 18, 1872 Otranto, Iowa, married Edward Odean Grovo 1894, d October 4, 1906 St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa);

Hellene (b abt 1876 Otranto, Iowa) and

Antonette Elizabeth (b November 24, 1876 Otranto, Iowa, married Edward David Taylor September 3, 1901 Clear Lake, Iowa, d March 7, 1952 Portland, Multnomah, Oregon).

Found the family living in Fayette County, Iowa in 1859. Johannes shortened his name to John after emigrating. He was a farmer.

Johannes registered for the Civil War draft July 1, 1863.

Found in the 1870 - 1895 censuses living at Otranto, Mitchell, Iowa:
1870: Johanna Larsen 45, Anna Larsen 35, Lau Larsen 12, Bitsal Larsen 13, Andrew Larsen 10, Margaret Larsen 6, Benj Larsen 5, Peter Larsen 4, Anna Larsen 2.

1880: John Larson 52, Anne Larson 47, Betsy 22, Andrew 17, Margarethe 15, Bernt 14, Petter 11, Gurine 9, Johanne 7, Hellene 5, Antoinette 3.

1885: John is widowed. John Larsen 56, Maggie Larsen 20, Birney Larsen 18, Peter Larsen 16, Anna Larsen 14 (says 94), Josie Larsen 12, Helen Larsen 10, Elizabeth Larsen 8, Andrew Larsen 21.

1895: John 66.

Johannes B Larson died 1896 at Otranto, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the First Lutheran (Evergreen) Cemetery, St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa.
