FUNERAL SERVICES FOR R. D. HAMMOND

Funeral services for R. D. Hammond were held June 13 from his home in Peaceville, south of Malvern, conducted by Rev. J. E. Wilkins and participated in by his comrades of the Civil war and by the members of the local Post American Legion.

The following annals of his life were given at the services:

Richard Deal Hammond was born in Boston, Belmont County, Ohio, December 13, 1842 and died in his home at Peaceville June 11, 1927. He went with his parents to Morgan County, Ohio, and there in 1861 he enlisted for service in the Civil war as member of Company B, 53rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served two years. He at once re-enlisted in the same company and served through the remainder of the war. He was wounded during the battle at Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1866 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Thompson. Of the three children of this union, a son Charles of Haxtum, Colo., survives. His wife died in January, 1873. Four months later Mr. Hammond came to Malvern to make a home. He was married to Miss Sophia Bonham in 1874. Four children were born of this union of which two daughters, Mrs. Frank Shirkey, Broken Bow, Neb., and Miss Blanche Hammond at home survive. She has been her father’s housekeeper during the past fifteen years, and the comradeship of father and daughter was a delight to witness. Mr. Hammond was a noticeably active man until his last illness which was but a week’s duration. He was a charter member of the Malvern Christian church and served as commander of the Milton Summers Post G. A. R.
