OLD VETERAN GONE

GEORGE R. HALL LAID TO REST IN TABOR CEMETERY AT 3:30 SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

After a long illness, George R. Hall passed away last Friday, passing to the rich reward that follows a long life of service to one’s fellowmen and care for the large family which he fathered affectionately and with self-sacrifice.

George R. Hall, born near Ickisburg, Penn., January 23, 1843, died at Tabor, August 22, 1919, at the age of seventy-six years, six months and twenty-nine days.

At the age of twenty he was married to Susannah Hench of Saville, Penn. To this union was born 11 children. Henry Hall, who died at the age of fifteen months, Cloid, Harry and Frank Hall and Mrs. Harriet Laird of Tabor, Mrs. Dessie Donner of Hemmingsford, Nebr.; William C. and Benjamin Hall of Chicago; Edward and Jacob Hall of Beaver Creek, Minn., and Anna Hall who passed to the great beyond some years ago, Mrs. Hall having gone to her reward some eleven years ago.

During the month of March, 1878, he with his wife and six children migrated from Perry County, Penn., to a farm five miles northwest of Fairmont, Nebr., and there remained for one year, moving from there to a sheep ranch three miles east of Milford, Nebr., here he lived for two years and then moved to Mills county, Iowa, living on different farms in Mills county until about eighteen years ago when he moved to Tabor, Iowa, where he lived until death called him.

He was a faithful believer in the Christian faith having united with the Lutheran Reform church at Saville, Penn., when but a small lad. After moving to Nebraska he organized a Sabbath School and gathered together a large number of men, women and children who rejoiced that a Sabbath School was so successfully carried on in their midst and which was the means of doing much good in the community.

After moving to Iowa he with his wife affiliated with the Methodist church at Silver City, Iowa, and while living north of Malvern, Iowa, was a member in good standing of the Presbyterian church of Malvern, and for the past eighteen years of his life was a honored member of the Congregational church of Tabor.

He was a Civil War veteran, having enlisted at Harrisburg, Penn., as a private in Company “B”, 202 Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry, and served his country in this capacity until the end of the war. He was commander of John Allen post for a number of years which office he held to his death.

Funeral services were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. O. Laird at 3:30 o’clock Sabbath afternoon, conducted by Rev. Frank C. Gonzales of the Tabor Congregational church. Music was furnished by a mixed quartet consisting of the following: Mr. Ralph Soule, Mr. Robert McClelland, Mrs. Marguerite McCormich and Miss Alice Rhode who sang most beautifully the following songs so well loved by the departed, “It is Well With My Soul.” “Saved by Grace,” and “Abide with Me.”

The pall bearers were five of his sons, assisted by C. O. Laird, William C. Cloid, Harry, Frank and Benjamin Hall. Floral contributions made by Mrs. Feese, Walter Reeves, Dr. Paul Good, Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Wearin, Mrs. Elizabeth Kilpatrick, Frank and Geo. Kilpatrick, Will Kilpatrick and wife, Twentieth Century Club, Women’s Relief Corps and Woman’s Union.

Those present from nearby towns were as follows: Tom Markel and family, Phil Markel and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ada Norton of Malvern, Mrs. Elizabeth Frank and George Kilpatrick, and Mr. and Mrs. Will Kilpatrick of Randolph, Iowa.

To all those who kindly assisted and for the kind words of sympathy so kindly extended during the last illness and death of our father, for the flowers with their fragrance of love, all helping so much to lighten the burden of sorrow, we wish to extend our heartfelt thanks.
