Jonathan F. Haines.
J. F. Haines was born near Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co., Ia., Jan. 2, 1843 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. J. Stack, in Lawrence, Kas., Feb. 13, 1922, at the age of 79 years, 1 month and 11 days. At the age of 18 he enlisted in Company D, 4th Iowa Cavalry and served about 4 years or until the close of the war.
On the 8th day of February, 1866, he was united in marriage to Martha Zentemire at Mt. Pleasant, Ia., who 9 years ago preceded him to the land beyond. To them were born 7 children, 5 daughters and 2 sons. In the spring of 1880 he moved with his family to Mills county and settled on a farm in Rawles township. Some years later they moved to Glenwood and lived there until the death of his wife since which time he had lived among his children. Soon after their marriage he and his companion united with the Methodist church and in 1892 when the class became disorganized the family united with the church of the United Brethren in Christ, his name still remaining on its church record. He leaves to mourn their loss his 7 children, Mrs. Ada Boyd, Gladbrook, Ia., Mrs. Clara Stack, Lawrence, Kas., Frank of Malvern, Ia., Mrs. Anna Kelley, Ontario, Calif., Mrs. Nona McDole, Glenwood, Mrs. Della Reasoner, Glenwood, Everett Haines, Glenwood, 20 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 2 sisters and a very large circle of other relatives and friends. He was a devoted husband and a tender and loving father.
The memory of Jonathan Haines will long linger with all who knew him for his strong manly characteristics, his cheerful optimistic disposition and his active inquiring mind made him a man who all who met enjoyed to converse with.
The body was taken in charge by the G. A. R. comrades at Lawrence, Kas., who saw it put on the train which carried it to Glenwood where he had made his home for so many years.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist church Thursday afternoon, Revs. G. T. Roberts and Howard Mintle having charge. The G. A. R. comrades of this city attended in a body. The church was filled with relatives, friends and acquaintances who came to pay the last respects to this man who had so faithfully served his country and his fellowmen. Interment was made in the family lot in the Glenwood cemetery.
