GLENWOOD ATTORNEY DIED SUDDENLY
Lou T. Genung, Prominent Mills County Attorney
Was Standard Bearer of Iowa Democratic Party
Lou Genung, who for forty-seven years has played a leading role in Iowa democracy and who is one of the largest cattle ranch owners in Nebraska, died at his home in Glenwood at 8 o’clock Monday morning from a stroke of apoplexy.
Mr. Genung had carried the standard of the Iowa democratic party from the time it was considered almost a crime to be a democrat up through the last presidential campaign, when he conducted a most effective two months’ speaking tour of the state. For over forty years he has practiced law most successfully. His unusual ability to understand all types of men served him in good stead both as a pleader with a jury and as an effective platform speaker. For the past twenty years he has devoted much of his time to the upbuilding of a ranch in Nebraska, and at the present time he and his sons owns one of the largest and most complete cattle ranches in the west.
Genung was born in Rock Island county, Illinois. He enlisted in the Illinois infantry and served throughout the war. He was captured at the battle of Franklin with a bayonet-thrust through his body, and was confined by the confederates in Andersonville prison for several months. Near the close of the war he was exchanged, and came to Vicksburg almost naked.
In 1868 he settled on a farm near Hastings, Mills county, Iowa. He soon began to turn from farming to the study of law, gradually taking up a practice as he studied in a lawyer’s office. In 1896 he was democratic candidate for congress and he served one term as attorney of Mills county. On several occasions he was a delegate to democratic national conventions. In 1902 Mr. Genung moved to Glenwood.
The funeral was held at the home in Glenwood Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock. The body was taken to Hastings, Iowa, for burial.
